The Evangelical Meeting Halls of East Belfast All Ages

Thursday 25 September, 11am

The Evangelical Meeting Halls of East Belfast, with guest speaker Kevin Miller

FREE

Our landscape in East Belfast is punctuated by the tall spires of our churches, but the area also has a rich and often overlooked heritage of small spaces in which people have met and worshipped in their own ways.

Drawing on his larger study of ‘evangelical meeting halls’ across Ulster, Kevin will present an illustrated talk discussing the networks of Gospel Halls, Mission Halls and similar buildings that have been a feature of areas of East Belfast. Kevin will place the halls in a wider Ulster context, explore the earliest halls and their origins, take you through the different types of halls, and argue for the distinctive contribution these interesting places have made to the area.

Melodrama: Brief Encounter PG

Saturday 1st November

Ulster Transport Museum

3pm - Entry to the Railway Gallery

4pm - Film starts

Part of BFI’s TOO MUCH: Melodrama on Film Season

Step into a world of steam, memory and forbidden passion as we bring David Lean’s timeless classic Brief Encounter to life in the atmospheric train hangar of the Ulster Transport Museum.

Among the vintage engines and echoes of the past, audiences will be swept away by one of cinema’s most poignant love stories - the tale of Laura and Alec, whose chance meeting at a railway station blossoms into a tender, impossible romance.

Brief Encounter is widely regarded as one of the greatest dramas of all time, praised for its emotionally devastating portrayal of fleeting, unconsummated love, exquisite performances from Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard and enduring cultural impact as a deeply realistic depiction of human longing and moral conflict. With Lean’s masterful direction, Rachmaninov’s soaring score and luminous black-and-white cinematography, it creates an intimate psychological experience that remains heartbreakingly relatable and timeless.

This immersive matinee experience will begin with tea, buns and vintage touches to set the scene and atmosphere of the 1940s.  Screenings of archival film and photographs from Belfast’s own cinema and railway history will provide a local context.  A host will introduce the film and cover its importance in our Melodrama Season.

Join us for an afternoon of romance, nostalgia and cinematic beauty in a setting that perfectly complements the emotional power of this unforgettable film.

Tickets £12, includes hot drink & buns

Blackjack + Jai Sian, Sound of Belfast 18

Strand presents a night of Soul

with Blackjack + Jai Sian

support by Crystal Dawn

Part of Sound of Belfast, held at Harland and Wolff Staff Club

From São Paulo to Belfast via Bangkok, Blackjack + Jai Sian serve up jazz, funk, soul, and serious groove with zero apologies. Led by award-winning Brazilian drummer/producer Henrique ‘Blackjack’ Franco and fronted by smoky-voiced powerhouse Jai Sian (yes, the one who had all four chairs spinning on The Voice UK), this genre-bending collective is anything but background music.

With a live band tighter than your favourite jeans after Christmas, they blend Herbie Hancock’s funk, Erykah Badu’s soul, and Portishead’s moody magic into a sound that hits hard and stays with you.

Come for the musicianship. Stay for the vibe. Leave slightly transformed.
